As a traveler, discovering a place means immersing in its culture, learning about its history and traditions, and enjoying its authentic cuisine. What’s more, an essential part of gaining a wider perspective while exploring a place is experiencing local music and dances.
The focus of this blog post is Bulgarian music. With time I have created three music playlists collecting songs mostly inspired by the beauty of the Bulgarian voices and music talent. The idea behind it is a way to share Bulgarian music with travelers who are curious and want to experience one more dimension of Bulgaria.
Just before press “Play” you might be surprised to know that:
In 1944, The French pop singer Sylvie Vartan was born in Iskrets, Bulgaria
In 1977, the Bulgarian folk song “Izlel e Delo haydutin” performed by the famous Bulgarian folk singer Valya Balanska was included in the Golden Record of the American spacecrafts Voyager 1 and Voyager 2.
In 1981, the rock singer Tina Turner had a tour in Bulgaria and gave concerts in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, and Burgas.
In 1985, Kamelia Todorova recorded a song with Roger Taylor, the drummer of The Queen who also produced her first album abroad.
In 1990, The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Recording with their album Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, Volume II compiled and recorded by Marcel Cellier.
Of course these are just a few random music facts from the last century and that’s why I would also suggest a small glimpse of the inspiring story of The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices and their collaborations with foreign musicians.
Back on track! Experiencing Bulgarian music while listening to these curated playlists could be an overwhelming experience. The great diversity and the immense talent of Bulgarian music artists who left their print over generations of Bulgarians including the music world scene inspired me to gather all in one place.
As an absolute eclectic mixture these playlists gather various music styles: from Bulgarian folk songs, jazz, pop, to some classic opera performed by the world-famous opera singers like Gena DImitrova and Raina Kabaivanska.
Here we go! Press “Play” and let the music lead the way!
